Burg, Medieval castle and archaeological site in Lisberg, Germany

Burg Lisberg is an early medieval spur castle on a ridge at 328 m above sea level in the municipality of Lisberg near Trabelsdorf, Bamberg district. Its core is separated from the outer bailey by a ditch; the outer bailey has a round tower and a gatehouse bearing the von Giech coat of arms dated 1521. The massive round keep, with a dungeon in its base, dates to the second half of the 13th century, and the castle chapel St. Nikolaus and Anna was first mentioned in 1421.

Built in the 8th century, the castle was first mentioned as "Elitzberg" in 820, when its lord Hiltuvin donated land to Fulda Abbey. It probably served as a county castle protecting the Volkfeldgau. In 1398 the Ansbach margrave Friedrich VI received the main castle as a fief, while Würzburg received the village and outer bailey. Around 1500 it became a joint inheritance castle; owners included the von Giech and von Münster families, the latter until 1707. In 1525 only the outer bailey was damaged, and later wars left the castle intact.

The castle's name comes from "Elitzberg", recorded in 820 when lord Hiltuvin gave land to Fulda Abbey. The gatehouse of the outer bailey bears the arms of the von Giech family with the date 1521. The chapel, mentioned in 1421, was dedicated to St Nicholas and St Anna.

The castle is private property; visits are possible by prior arrangement, and it can be booked for events. It stands on a hill spur at 328 m above sea level near Lisberg, with the core castle separated from the outer bailey by a moat. The outer bailey's neck ditch and the zwinger around the core castle and northern outer bailey are preserved.

The castle is the only undamaged one in the Steigerwald. In the Peasants' War of 1525 only the outer bailey was damaged; the Lisberg lords' diplomacy spared the main castle in the Margrave Wars and the Thirty Years' War. The gatehouse bears the von Giech coat of arms dated 1521.
