Burgruine Lobenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Zell, Germany
Burgruine Lobenstein is a medieval castle ruin whose large trapezoidal residential tower stands on Zeller Castle Hill at 565 meters elevation. The tower remains the dominant structure at this site and can be easily spotted from surroundings.
The castle originated in the Middle Ages but suffered destruction during the Hussite Wars in 1428, followed by partial reconstruction. Swedish forces dealt it another blow in 1633, leaving it in the state visible today.
The residential tower displays medieval construction with a pointed window niche on its west side fitted with stone benches. These carved seats show how people once used this space in daily life.
The path to the ruins is marked and takes about 30 minutes on foot from Gasthof Schwarzfischer in the village. The climb is steep, so sturdy footwear and basic fitness help make the walk comfortable.
A steel staircase spirals up inside the residential tower, allowing visitors to explore cramped interior rooms and original stonework. Once at the top, views stretch across the rolling Vorderer Bayerischer Wald hills toward the distant Hoher Bogen and Arber mountains.
