Burgruine, Castle ruin in Neubauhof, Germany.
Burgruine Speckfeld is a castle ruin situated on a forested hilltop near Markt Einersheim in Bavaria. Remnants of the fortification include standing walls with archways and window openings that visitors can view from hiking paths in the surrounding woods.
The fortification was built around 1200 along a trade route connecting Nuremberg and Frankfurt. It suffered severe damage during regional conflicts in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The castle belonged to noble families including the Lords of Hohenlohe and Counts of Rechtern-Limpurg-Speckfeld until its abandonment as a residence in 1693.
The ruin is accessible via marked hiking trails from nearby towns and communities. The surrounding area is part of a protected natural zone where paths are clearly marked for visitors.
The castle's underground chambers serve as a winter refuge for bats that hibernate in the cool depths. This natural use of the ruins has become a key reason for the site's protected status.
