Burgruine Stauf, Castle ruin in Thalmässing, Germany.

Burgruine Stauf is a fortified structure located on elevated terrain near Thalmässing with a roughly 21-meter-high keep and irregularly shaped hexagonal walls. Gothic window openings remain visible, revealing how interior spaces were once designed and lit.

The fortress first appears in written records in 1125 when Wernhard de Stove was documented as its owner. Over centuries it served as a military stronghold before eventually falling into ruin.

The name reflects the families who built and controlled this place in medieval times, and today the ruin serves as a destination for people interested in old structures and regional history. Visitors come here to walk around and experience how such fortifications once stood and functioned.

The site is reachable on foot via established trails that climb steeply toward the keep from the base below. Sturdy footwear and a moderate level of fitness help make the ascent easier and more comfortable.

The top of the keep is accessible via internal stairs, offering expansive views across the Bavarian landscape below. This elevated vantage point makes the steep climb worthwhile for those who make the effort.
