Burgruine Velburg, Castle ruin in Velburg, Germany
Burgruine Velburg is a castle site on a rocky hilltop in Bavaria, with stone remains still visible today. From there one can overlook the valley and recognize the foundation walls as well as parts of the fortification walls and keep.
The castle was first recorded in 1129 and initially belonged to the Lords of Velburg. After this family line died out around 1217, it came under the rule of the Wittelsbacher dynasty.
The ruins show parts of fortification walls and towers that reflect medieval building methods of the region. Visitors can read from the layout and structure how the castle once functioned and what role it held in the valley.
Access is via marked paths from Velburg town center, with information signs explaining the layout and history along the way. Best visited in dry weather as the hilltop paths can be steep and uneven.
The fortress was destroyed by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. The stones from the ruins were later used to build Velburg's parish church.
