Burgruine Wolfstein is a medieval castle ruin set on a hill near the town of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, in the Bavarian region of Germany. A tower and sections of stone walls are still standing, making the outline of the former stronghold easy to read from a distance.
The site was first mentioned in records around 1120, when it served as the seat of the Wolfstein family. It was heavily damaged during a regional conflict in 1504 and was never fully rebuilt, which left it in the ruined state seen today.
The name comes from the Wolfstein noble family, who ruled this area for generations and left their mark on the region. Visitors can still walk among the remaining walls and get a sense of how a hilltop lordship was organized.
The ruins are reached on foot, as the hilltop location has no vehicle access. The path can get slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading up.
Excavations on the site uncovered a medieval well system that was used to supply the castle with water from underground sources. This kind of underground infrastructure is rarely found in such a readable condition at a hilltop ruin.
