Burg Hohlach

Burg Hohlach is a castle site in Simmershofen with medieval defensive remains and a baroque manor house built in the 18th century. The complex sits at the village's northern edge and displays layers of construction spanning centuries of development.

A defensive tower was built between 1024 and 1039 under King Konrad II to protect a major trade route running from Frankfurt toward Rothenburg and Ochsenfurt. This early fortification became the foundation for a site that evolved over subsequent centuries.

The site is connected to the rise of the House of Hohenlohe, a noble family whose power radiated from this location across the region. Today, the landscape still reflects the influence this family held over local life and settlement patterns.

The site is reached through local roads in Simmershofen, with the baroque manor house at Hohlach 55 serving as a visual landmark. The location is straightforward to find within the village layout and provides good views of the entire complex.

Gerlach von Hohenlohe kept strict control over Hohlach even after selling Uffenheim's city rights to Nuremberg's burgrave in 1378. This choice reveals how strategically important this place remained to the family despite letting other holdings go.
