Burgstall Löweneck, Medieval castle ruins in Nittendorf, Germany.

Burgstall Löweneck is a castle ruin situated on a rocky ridge of Kühberg mountain, located above the Naab Valley. The stone remains stand at approximately 430 meters elevation and command views across the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built before 1277 and served as a strategic stronghold for Bavarian dukes controlling the region. Later, a royal order resulted in its complete demolition, leaving only the ruins that remain visible today.

The site reveals how medieval nobles built fortifications on hilltops to monitor trade routes and river crossings in the region. Visitors can observe the layout and understand the defensive logic that shaped how people controlled movement through the valley below.

The site is accessible via a hiking trail starting from Penk village, which is part of the Regensburg Castle Trail network. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the path is steep in places and the hilltop is exposed to weather.

In the 19th century, a police officer allegedly shot a treasure hunter who was attempting to loot the castle grounds. This incident remains part of local lore and shows how the ruins captured people's imagination.
