Burgstall Löweneck, Medieval castle ruins in Nittendorf, Germany.
The stone remnants of Burgstall Löweneck stand 100 meters above the Naab Valley on a rocky spur of Kühberg mountain at 430 meters elevation.
Built before 1277, the fortress served as a strategic point for Bavarian dukes until King Ludwig ordered its complete demolition in 1316.
The site represents the architectural methods and defensive strategies employed by medieval German nobility in controlling important trade routes and river crossings.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site through a hiking trail from Penk village, which forms part of the Regensburg Castle Trail network.
Reports from the 19th century tell of a fatal incident when a police officer shot a treasure hunter who was attempting to plunder the castle grounds.
