Schloss Mühltroff, Medieval castle in Pausa-Mühltroff, Germany

Schloss Mühltroff began as a lowland castle on a greenstone rock, a round defensive and watchtower ringed by moats, around which residential and farm buildings and a knight's estate grew over the centuries. The main building dates from the 16th and 17th centuries; the tower was rebuilt after the 1817 fire and remodeled between 1820 and 1837 and in 1856. The manor house, sold privately in 1999, now holds modern apartments.

Mühltroff Castle began in the 10th–11th century as a lowland fortress on a greenstone rock, a round watchtower ringed by moats. Before 1274 it belonged to the Lords of Lobdeburg; in 1349 it appears as a Meissen fief called castrum, seat of the Vogt of Plauen. In 1357 the Vogts ceded it to the Wettin margraves Balthasar and Wilhelm, and in 1380 it burned in the Guttenberg Feud. From 1436 to 1591 the Lords of Sack held it, followed by Schönberg, Lindemann, Mandelsloh, and from 1604 to 1775 the von Bodenhausen; Count Otto Carl Erdmann von Kospoth died in the great fire of 1817. From 1822 the Counts of Hohenthal-Püchau owned it, and in 1940 it passed to the town.

Schloss Mühltroff is the cultural centre of the village and can be visited on guided tours. Its rooms host club activities and changing exhibitions, and the building is known for its "Schwarze Küche" (black kitchen), a historic smoke-blackened kitchen that visitors can see during a tour.

The castle is accessible through stairs and corridors spanning multiple floors, including lower levels with historic kitchen functions. Visitor groups should expect an experience that moves from cellar spaces up to the roofline.
