Burg Müneck

Burg Müneck, Medieval castle ruins in Breitenholz, Germany

Burg Müneck consists of castle ruins perched on a 543-meter-high hill at the southern edge of Schönbuch forest near Breitenholz. The remains display a deep moat and defensive earthworks that outline the site's original fortification system.

The first written mention dates to 1259, when Knight Hugo von Müneck, a vassal of Count Rudolf of Tübingen, sold a farm to Kilchberg Monastery. This early reference shows the castle was already functioning as the seat of a local noble power in the 13th century.

The castle derives its name from the Lords of Müneck, a local noble family who shaped the region for generations. Their coat of arms, featuring three or four pointed elements arranged in different directions, remains documented from medieval times.

A steep footpath leads up from Breitenholz to the ruins, or visitors can take a gentler route that begins at the adventure playground nearby. These different approaches let visitors choose a path that suits their fitness level and preferences.

Archaeological excavations in 1924 led by castle researcher Konrad Albert Koch uncovered the original layout and defensive structures of the site. This scientific investigation deepened understanding of how the medieval fortress was designed and fortified.
