Burg Neudeck, Bayern, Medieval castle ruins in Bad Birnbach, Germany
Burg Neudeck is a castle ruin perched on a rocky outcrop in Bad Birnbach, Bavaria, rising about 435 meters above the valley floor. The site overlooks the Rottal and has steep slopes that gave the defenders clear command of the surrounding land.
The castle began in the 12th century as a seat of the Neudeck family, first documented when Wolftrigil de Nideke appeared in records in 1160. The family held it until the mid-15th century, when the Hollup family took over.
The site shows medieval building methods and defense design through its remaining walls and findings, revealing how the nobility lived at that time. Visitors can still trace the layout of living spaces and fortified areas in the ruins.
The site sits on a hilltop and requires a walk uphill from the parking area or the town of Bad Birnbach. It is open year-round, but trail conditions may vary depending on weather.
Beneath the castle ruin lie hidden structures and objects from the late medieval and early modern periods, gradually revealed through excavations. These underground layers tell stories about daily life within the fortress, going beyond what the standing stones alone can show.
