Burg Neunußberg, Castle ruin in Viechtach, Germany
Burg Neunußberg is a castle ruin in Viechtach featuring a stone residential tower roughly 25 meters high with five stories. A chapel dedicated to Saint Michael occupies the grounds and dates to around 1350.
The fortress was founded around 1340 by Konrad von Nußberg and served as a stronghold in the region. In 1564, lightning strikes caused extensive damage that led to the site being abandoned.
The chapel features baroque architectural details, including a small tower topped with a bulbous dome that visitors can observe while walking through the grounds.
Visitors can climb to the tower top using a wooden staircase while reading information panels that explain the site's historical context. The grounds are easy to reach on foot and offer views of the surrounding landscape from the top.
Since 1968, the grounds have hosted annual festival performances that bring historical events of the region to life. These events use the site's setting to retell stories from the past.
