Burgstall Dornberg consists of castle ruins situated on a hilltop around 450 meters (1,475 feet) high near Erharting in upper Bavaria. The location holds evidence of both prehistoric settlements and medieval fortifications that developed over centuries.
The stronghold was established in the 12th century by nobleman Dietmar von Dornberg to guard important trade routes heading toward Landshut. In 1322, following the Battle of Mühldorf, it briefly served as a place of captivity for Friedrich the Fair before his removal to another fortress.
The site represents multiple archaeological periods, including settlements from the Hallstatt era and medieval fortifications that shaped regional development.
The site holds protected status requiring official permits for any excavation or research work. Visitors should note that access may vary depending on weather conditions and the season.
Following the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322, the castle temporarily held prisoner Friedrich the Fair before his transfer to Trausnitz Castle.
