Burg Hopfen

The stone castle stands on a hill overlooking Hopfen am See, with walls rising up to three meters in height and clear divisions between sections.

During the Investiture Controversy in 1078, the castle served as a refuge for Wigolt, the counter-bishop of Augsburg, marking its early historical significance.

The structure represents the earliest stone fortress in the Allgäu region, providing evidence of medieval architectural techniques and defensive strategies.

The castle site opens for visitors throughout the year, offering guided tours and information panels that explain the layout of the former living quarters and chapel.

The restoration project, which began in 1999, involved local volunteers who worked alongside archaeologists to uncover and preserve the medieval remains.
