Burg Hopfen

Burg Hopfen is a medieval castle site in Füssen that sits on a hill overlooking Hopfen Lake, with walls preserved in places up to three meters in height. The excavations have uncovered distinct areas including living quarters and a chapel.

The castle emerged as an important stone fortress and held strategic significance by the 11th century, when it served as a refuge for religious leaders. This early settlement shaped the military development of the entire Allgäu region.

The site shows traces of medieval settlement and defense of the Hopfen area, with artifacts uncovered by archaeologists revealing different periods of occupation. Visitors can today understand how people lived here and which rooms served as living quarters or places of worship based on the exposed foundations.

The site is open to visitors year-round and offers information panels that explain the layout of the structures. Guided tours are available and help visitors better understand the preserved remains and their historical context.

Since 1999 the site has been restored through a community project where local volunteers worked alongside professionals during excavations. This collaboration both preserved the remains and deepened the community's connection to the medieval past.
