Burg Chameregg, Medieval castle ruin in Cham, Germany
Burg Chameregg is a castle ruin near Cham in Bavaria, with a tower about 22 meters high still standing today. The three meter thick walls display the solid construction of medieval building techniques clearly.
The castle was built in 1193 by the Diepoldinger dynasty and served as part of the fortification system around Cham. By the late Middle Ages it lost importance and gradually fell into decline.
The name Chameregg comes from its position on a ridge, reflecting the builders' choice of this strategic spot. The remaining structure shows how occupants used multiple levels to combine protection with living space.
The path to the castle ruin starts at the inn 'Zum Odenturm' about one kilometer east of Chammunster, where signs mark the route. A walk through nature leads uphill to the ruin and offers views of the surroundings.
The ruin offers a rare cross-section through a high medieval keep, revealing the room layouts and building techniques of its time. This fragment shows details of medieval daily life that usually remain hidden in fully intact structures.
