Centrum Bavaria Bohemia, deutsche Organisation
The Centrum Bavaria Bohemia is a cultural center housed in a converted building in Schönsee that was once a brewery called the Kommunbräuhaus. Carefully renovated and expanded from 2004 to 2006, it now contains exhibition spaces, event areas, meeting rooms for dialogue, and a multimedia room with visual displays about cross-border cooperation.
The center was established in 2006 after a group called Bavaria Bohemia e.V., composed of members from both countries, formed in 2004 to build cultural bridges. Since its opening, it has awarded an annual prize called Brückenbauer (bridge builder) to people and projects that strengthen mutual understanding between Germany and the Czech Republic.
The center bears a name that directly reflects its mission to connect two regions across the border. Visitors experience bilingual displays and witness local artists and craftspeople showcasing their work, bringing traditions from both the Bavarian and Czech sides into everyday practice.
The center is open most days from morning through late afternoon, with extended hours on weekends. The building is fully accessible with ramps and no steps, making it easy for visitors with wheelchairs or mobility challenges to move through the spaces.
The renovation project was of such quality that it was published in an architecture magazine and received multiple design awards. These accolades show how successfully the architects balanced preserving the original structure with integrating modern functionality throughout.
