Communicant Semiconductor Technologies, Semiconductor factory complex in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany

Communicant Semiconductor Technologies is an industrial complex in Frankfurt (Oder) with multiple production buildings for semiconductor manufacturing. The facility includes specialized clean rooms and technical infrastructure designed for high-precision manufacturing processes.

Communicant Semiconductor Technologies was founded to mass-produce integrated circuits using carbon-doped silicon-germanium technology developed at the local IHP institute, itself created in 1983 from the research division of Halbleiterwerk Frankfurt (Oder). Investors included Intel, the Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority and Deutsche Bank, and the company raised about $325 million in April 2002. Federal loan guarantees covering 75 percent of the €1.3 billion project did not materialize, and the company shut down in December 2003 with the factory unfinished; 223 million euros were lost.

The site's name recalls the failed Communicant project, whose investors included Intel, the Dubai Airport Free Zone Authority and Deutsche Bank. After the 2003 collapse, the unfinished plant became a solar factory under Conergy in 2006, then passed to Astronergy, which ended module production on 31 March 2019, leaving 181 employees without jobs.

The factory is located on the edge of the city and is accessible by car or public transportation. Visitors should be aware that this is a private industrial site that is normally not open for visits.

The site was later taken over by a solar company and converted into a solar cell production facility. This transformation shows how industrial sites can be quickly adapted for new technologies.
