The German Maritime Museum occupies a former church building, St Catherine's Church, and contains 50 aquariums housing 600 marine species from different oceans.
The institution started in 1951 as a natural history museum under Professor Otto Dibbelt before evolving into an oceanographic research center through multiple transformations.
The museum maintains extensive scientific collections focusing on marine biology, fishing practices, oceanography, and marine geology through four separate locations in the region.
The museum welcomes visitors daily from April through October between 10:00 and 17:00, with modified winter hours and complete accessibility for wheelchair users.
The Ozeaneum section features 39 aquariums containing 7,000 animals and presents the largest whale exhibition in the world.
