The German Games Museum in Chemnitz holds 35,000 games from around the world spanning the last ten centuries, plus 1,500 books of game literature, catalogues, documents, graphics and posters. Its permanent exhibition and changing special shows occupy a building opened in 1994 in the solaris technology and business park; a games room holds 2,700 board games and consoles such as Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3.
The supporting association was founded in Hamburg in 1986 on the initiative of collector J. Peter Lemcke, its first chairman and museum director. An exhibition opened at the Altonaer Museum in Hamburg in 1990. With backing from a private investor, a new museum building was inaugurated in 1994 in the solaris technology and business park in Chemnitz; further exhibition space for special shows followed in 2011 and 2013.
The museum's name is spelled SPIELEmuseum with capital letters in its logo, and its collection spans games from the last ten centuries worldwide. Visitors can try 2,700 board games and electronic titles (Wii, DSi, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3) in the open play room. The museum also runs the Chemnitz spielt! event, a German Games School Championship, a European Games Festival and night openings.
The museum is barrier-free and can be visited by wheelchair. It sits in the solaris Technologie- und Gewerbepark in Chemnitz, with extra exhibition space for temporary shows added in 2011 and 2013. A games room holds 2,700 board games plus consoles such as Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 for playing on site.
