Oberhessisches Museum, Regional museum in Giessen, Germany
The Oberhessisches Museum uses three different buildings across the city to display varied collections. Each location presents archaeological finds, medieval crafts, contemporary art, and objects from the Mediterranean region.
The roots trace back to a medieval fortress built around 1330 to protect the region. The building served as a museum much later, after it was transferred to serve the public interest.
The museum displays works that show how artistic ideas have changed across the region over time. Visitors can see what local artists created and which subjects mattered to them in different periods.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours available on select days. Since the collections are spread across several buildings, visitors should allow enough time and check ahead to see which locations are currently active.
The museum has organized hundreds of exhibitions since 1980, showing a long history of collection work. Many of these temporary displays eventually became permanent parts of the current holdings.
