Dominikanerkirche

The Dominikanerkirche is a Gothic church featuring a three-aisled basilica with tall windows that flood the interior with light. Slender columns support the side aisles, creating a vertical emphasis that draws the eye upward throughout the space.

Founded in 1386 as a Dominican monastery church, the building originally had medieval features throughout its interior. Between 1747 and 1752, architect Johann Baptist Zimmermann completely transformed the interior with extensive renovations.

The church displays ornate Rococo decorations with stucco work and frescoes covering walls and ceilings. These artistic elements shape the interior character and reveal the religious craftsmanship valued in 18th-century Bavaria.

The church opens for services and special events throughout the year, though access can be limited outside these times. Checking ahead before your visit ensures you will find it open and can see the interior properly.

Tree-ring analysis reveals that parts of the roof structure are surprisingly old, dating back to the late 1200s and 1300s. These findings suggest an earlier building may have stood on this site before the current church was constructed.
