Dominikanerkirche St. Blasius in Regensburg, Gothic church in Regensburg, Germany.
Dominikanerkirche St. Blasius is a Gothic hall church in Regensburg with three naves separated by columns and covered with cross-ribbed vaults. The interior appears narrow and ends with a three-part apse rather than a traditional transept.
The church was founded in 1229 and became one of Germany's largest mendicant order buildings, breaking the typical size rules that such communities usually followed. This growth reflected the Dominican order's growing importance in the city.
Carved figures of kneeling monks appear on the service capitals throughout the interior, showing how the Dominican community saw themselves. These sculptures remain visible today and give a direct sense of monastic life from centuries ago.
After major restoration work, the building reopened in 2024 and is once again accessible to visitors. Regular Sunday evening services take place at 8:00 PM and are open to those interested in attending.
During restoration of the church tower, workers uncovered a time capsule holding relics from the period when the building was first constructed. This discovery revealed objects that the Dominican community had placed inside centuries ago.
