Haus Murach

Haus Murach is a castle ruin in Oberviechtach with a stone keep rising 20 meters (65 feet) that offers views across the Upper Palatinate Forest toward the Bohemian border. The site includes the main tower and the foundations of surrounding buildings that reveal the fortress's original layout and scale.

The fortress was first documented in 1110, with the current stone keep built around 1250 as part of regional border defenses. It served as a strategic post for controlling and protecting the territorial interests along the Bohemian frontier.

The site brings the local community together through events that celebrate its medieval roots and regional heritage. Visitors can experience how people here connect with this place's historical importance as they explore the grounds.

Visitors should obtain the gate key from the caretaker at the Obermurach house before entering the site. The location is accessible on foot, but paths can be muddy or slippery depending on weather, so sturdy shoes and extra time for a slow walk are advised.

The grounds include a miniature model of the fortress and an adventure playground that appeal to families with children. These additions show how the castle ruins function today as a space where different generations can explore and play together.
