Schranne 2, 3, Franciscan monastery in Bamberg, Germany
Schranne 2, 3 is a monastery complex with Gothic features located near the Regnitz River in Bamberg, consisting of interconnected wings built from stone. The site maintains its medieval character and now serves as office space for several government departments and law enforcement agencies.
The Franciscan order established itself in Bamberg in 1223 and moved a century later to former Templar buildings on this site. This relocation marked the beginning of the complex's role as a major monastic center with burial functions for city residents.
The monastery served for centuries as a burial ground and spiritual center for Bamberg's residents. Today little remains of this sacred role, but the building's structure still reflects its former importance to the city's daily life.
The complex is now part of government offices and is not open to the public as a museum or tourist site. Visitors can view the exterior from the street to appreciate the preserved architecture and its riverside setting.
A crucifix altar from 1429 remains within the complex and displays the craftsmanship of a master artist of Bamberg's altar tradition. This piece testifies to the fine religious artworks the monastery once housed.
