Built in 1962 as a radar station tower along the East-West German border, the structure was transformed into an observation tower in 1996 after reunification.
The tower represents the transformation of military infrastructure into public spaces, marking the shift from divided Germany to a unified nation.
Visitors can climb 166 steps to reach the observation platform, which provides views across the Thuringian landscape and surrounding regions.
The steel structure maintains its original anchoring wire system despite being classified as a free-standing tower, creating an unusual engineering configuration.
