Tower of Unity

The Tower of Unity is a steel observation tower on Heldrastein mountain near Treffurt, standing 30 meters tall. It features a lattice framework with diagonal bracing cables and an octagonal shelter building at its base.

The structure was built in 1962 as a radar station near the German-German border during the Cold War division. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, it was converted into a public observation platform starting in 1996.

The name refers to Germany's reunification after the Berlin Wall fell, symbolizing the moment when people from both former sides could meet again at this location.

The climb involves 166 steps to reach the observation platform at the top. Wear comfortable shoes for this ascent, and plan to bring water since there are few facilities on the mountain itself.

Although the tower stands freely today, it retained its original guy wire anchoring system, creating an unusual engineering solution. This dual function of the cables remains visible when you examine the structure closely.
