Rheydter Höhe, Summit in Mönchengladbach, Germany
Rheydter Höhe is a summit in Mönchengladbach that rises about 64 meters above the surrounding landscape and marks the city's highest point. Its base features recreational facilities including a water park, pond, forested area, barbecue spots, minigolf, and a café.
This hill formed after the 1945 bombing of Mönchengladbach and Rheydt, when large areas of both towns were destroyed. Rubble from the destroyed buildings was collected at this location and gradually accumulated to create the current elevation.
Local people call this place Monte Clamotte, a name that comes from its role as a dumping ground for post-war debris. This nickname shows how communities created meaning from a practical necessity after the war.
The site is easily accessible and offers several pathways for visitors to walk and explore. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to enjoy the various activities available on the grounds.
On clear days, visitors can spot wind turbines in the distance that belong to a large open-pit mine. It is also possible to find traces of old waste materials along the pathways after heavy rain, making the site's history physically visible.
