Eckbauerbahn, Cable car system in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
The Eckbauerbahn is a cable car system in Garmisch-Partenkirchen that carries passengers from the Olympic Ski Stadium to an elevation of 1237 meters. The modern system uses 45 gondolas with capacity for six persons each and transports large numbers of visitors up into the mountains hourly.
The original cable car was built in 1956 by Pohlig-Heckel-Bleichert and ceased operations in 2018 when replacement parts became unavailable. The new system was then created to restore mountain access in this region and handle visitor traffic with modern equipment.
The mountain station serves as a meeting point for winter sports enthusiasts and hikers exploring the Werdenfelser Land region throughout the year. People use this location to rest and enjoy views before continuing their outdoor activities.
The system reopened in 2019 with comfortable gondolas for the ascent into the mountain area. Visitors should dress appropriately, as it is significantly colder and windier at the top than in the valley below.
At the valley station there is a cafe offering refreshments where visitors can observe the technical operations of the system from close up. This spot combines relaxation with the chance to understand how the cable car works from within.
