Sperrwerk Wischhafen

The Sperrwerk Wischhafen is a tidal barrier with two pairs of double-swing gates that control water levels and a lift bridge spanning the passage. The entire structure works as an integrated system where the gates close automatically when water levels become too high, keeping flood waters away from the land behind it.

The barrier was completed in 1978 following severe storm surges in 1962 that devastated the region and revealed the need for stronger flood protection. This construction project was a direct response to that disaster, designed to shield communities from similar catastrophes in the future.
