Todtnau Waterfall

Todtnau Waterfall is a natural cascade in the Black Forest where the Stübenbach stream plunges over granite rocks in two visible stages, dropping a total of 97 meters. The water flows through a forested mountain setting, creating a striking display of falling water surrounded by dense forest.

The waterfall gained official protection status as a natural monument in 1987 under the German heritage preservation system. This designation ensured the long-term conservation of this forest cascade.

The waterfall draws hikers and locals seeking connection with the Black Forest landscape, serving as a natural gathering point between mountain communities. Visitors often return seasonally to witness how the setting changes throughout the year.

A well-maintained walking path of about one kilometer leads to viewing platforms positioned at different heights around the cascade. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths can be wet and slippery, especially during rainy seasons or after winter freeze-thaw cycles.

During winter, the cascading water freezes into massive ice formations that create temporary natural sculptures throughout the waterfall. This seasonal transformation offers a completely different sight than warmer months.
