Ehemaliger Standortübungsplatz Landshut mit Isarleite, Protected nature reserve in Landshut, Germany.
This nature reserve unfolds as a patchwork of meadows, wooded sections with maple, ash, and beech trees, and small ponds scattered across the Isar floodplain. The landscape moves between open grassland and forest patches that trace the river valley.
The site served as a military training ground for the German Armed Forces for decades before receiving protected status in 2001. This transformation allowed the landscape to gradually transition from active military use toward ecological recovery.
The reserve's name reflects its past military use and the Isar slope that defines the landscape, with visitors able to observe how nature reclaimed this former training ground. This layering of history in the vegetation tells the story of gradual restoration and natural resilience.
The L4 trail provides an accessible route through the reserve and takes roughly two hours to walk at a leisurely pace. Conditions are best during warmer months when paths dry easily and wildlife is more active.
Shallow depressions left by tank tracks have been carefully maintained as breeding sites for endangered species such as the yellow-bellied toad. These accidental water holes demonstrate how remnants of military activity can become essential habitats.
