Klösterl Walchensee, Monastery in Zwergern, Bavaria, Germany
Klösterl Walchensee is a monastery building situated on a peninsula on the western shore of Lake Walchen, roughly 330 meters away from Walchensee village. It contains a chapel with religious artworks and serves as a residential facility today.
Wolfgang Holzer founded a Hieronymite monastery here in 1688 with backing from Bavarian Electress Maria Antonia of Austria. The community remained for roughly 4 decades before circumstances led the monks to relocate.
The St. Anna Chapel displays a baroque high altar crafted by Cosmas Damian Asam in 1728, reflecting regional artistic traditions of the era. The work shows how local craftsmen approached religious art during this period.
The building is accessible by land and operates as a youth hostel managed by the Diocese of Augsburg. Visitors should know that accommodations are the main purpose of the facility, though the chapel is typically open for viewing.
The Hieronymite monks left here in 1725 due to disputes with neighboring Benediktbeuern Monastery over hunting and fishing rights. This conflict prompted the community to establish themselves anew in Munich.
