Konzilgebäude Konstanz, Medieval warehouse in Constance, Germany
The Konzilgebäude in Constance is a massive warehouse building with thick walls and large interior spaces. It contains strong oak pillars, multiple halls for different events and uses, plus restaurants offering views of the lake and distant mountains.
The building was constructed between 1388 and 1391 as a trading center and played a key role in commerce with Italy. In 1417 it hosted the election of Pope Martin V, an event of major European importance.
The building serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors meet for celebrations and public events throughout the year. Its location by the lake makes it a natural focal point for the city's social life.
The building sits right on the lakeshore and is easy to locate and access. Visitors should allow time to explore the restaurants and note that the halls are sometimes reserved for events or conferences.
The original oak pillars from the 14th century remain visible and form the structural core of the building. Despite modern event technology, these ancient wooden supports are clearly seen, and visitors sense the presence of the medieval trading period.
