Museum of Saxon Folk Art with Puppet Theater Collection

The Museum of Saxon Folk Art with Puppet Theater Collection displays traditional crafts from the Saxon region, including carved wooden objects, embroidered textiles, and Sorbian folk costumes. The collection brings together puppet theater figures of different styles under one roof.

The building was constructed over 400 years ago and opened as a museum in 1913. Since then it has collected folk crafts and puppet traditions from Saxony, preserving them for future generations.

The marionettes and hand puppets displayed upstairs come from different periods and show how puppet theater was part of regional life. Visitors see figures that were used in performances and fairs, understanding the role puppet plays held in local entertainment traditions.

The museum is located in Neustadt and welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday, with most people spending around two hours there. Navigation through the different floors is straightforward since the collections are arranged in a clear way.

Visitors can try their hand at traditional techniques in special workshop areas, such as woodworking or simple craft methods. This hands-on experience makes it possible to directly understand the skills of early craftspeople.
