Eichstädter Warte

The Eichstädter Warte is a medieval stone tower rising from the flat Thuringian landscape, built with hefty limestone and sandstone blocks arranged in a circular plan. Its solid construction and elevated position make it a striking landmark across the surrounding terrain.

A fortified structure first appeared at this location during the 10th century under King Heinrich I to guard against Hungarian raids. The tower seen today was built later in the medieval period, reflecting how this defensive purpose remained important across generations.

Wooden remains from the tower were analyzed using dendrochronology, a technique that reveals exact construction dates from growth rings. This study showed the current structure was built in 1483, pinpointing precisely when it was erected.
