Kreidegrube Saturn is a former surface mine located between Breitenburg and Kronsmoor in Steinburg district. The site is now a water-filled pit with steep chalk walls that reveal the scale of early extraction work.
The Saturn factory began chalk extraction in 1898 and operated the mine until 1916, when water flooding halted production. The site then became a recreational lake until 1965, when renewed mining efforts drained it again.
The mine was a major employer for local residents and shaped how the landscape looked for generations. Today, the steep walls and water body remind visitors of that industrial past.
The site is mostly open and can be viewed from multiple angles, especially from the pit's edge. Keep in mind that the area is largely natural landscape with few marked paths, so wear sturdy footwear.
Between 1916 and 1965, the flooded pit served as a popular swimming lake that drew visitors from the surrounding area. This shift shows how an industrial site can unexpectedly become a recreational destination for local people.
