Elstermühle Plessa, Historical watermill and museum in Plessa, Germany
Elstermühle Plessa is a three-story mill on the Schwarzen Elster river with a large water wheel and an extensive collection of milling machinery. The building contains operational equipment on different levels, including roller mills, a crusher, and elevators for grain flow.
The building was reconstructed in 1711 after a fire and received its current equipment in 1925 with modern grinding systems. This modernization made the mill one of the region's most technically advanced facilities at that time.
The mill museum displays traditional craftsmanship through tools and machines from different periods that visitors can explore across multiple levels. The spaces show how millers worked and what techniques they relied on.
Visits require advance booking and take place on set days, such as Pentecost Monday or during German Mill Day celebrations. It is best to check current opening times beforehand, as visitor access varies depending on the season.
Next to the main building stands a small sawmill that shows how water power was also used for other crafts. This additional workshop demonstrates the varied uses of water energy in earlier times.
