Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum, Railway museum in Darmstadt, Germany.
The Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum sits on the grounds of a former railway depot and displays steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and railway equipment. The site with its turntable and repair shops shows how a working railway facility was organized and operated.
The site began in 1898 as a railway workshop for the United Prussian-Hessian State Railways. For decades it served to maintain and repair locomotives and rail cars before being converted into a museum in 1976.
The collection shows how people in the region relied on railways for travel and transport in their daily lives. The exhibits reveal how technical changes shaped the way communities moved goods and passengers over time.
The museum is mainly open on Sundays and public holidays, with extra weekday visits available Wednesdays from April through September. Most of the locomotives and equipment are displayed outdoors or in covered areas that are easy to walk through.
The collection includes the steam locomotive 4981 Mainz, a Prussian G 8 that returned from decades of service in Turkey. The museum also houses an Austrian rack railway locomotive, an uncommon find in a German collection.
