Castra Brigobannis

Castra Brigobannis is a Roman military fort in Hufingen, built with defensive walls, towers, and internal structures following standard Roman military design. The site sits near the Breg River and shows the layout of a typical Roman fortress with its organized arrangement of buildings and defensive works.

The fort was established in the first century after Christ and served as an important point in Rome's frontier defense against Germanic tribes. It was eventually abandoned as Roman military priorities shifted and territory changed hands.

Excavations here have revealed pottery and tools that show what daily life was like for Roman soldiers stationed at this outpost. These discoveries help visitors understand how people lived and worked in this remote military community.

The archaeological site is normally open to visitors and has information boards explaining the military history. Comfortable shoes are helpful since the terrain is uneven and shade is limited.

The name Brigobannis may come from a Celtic language, reflecting how the site was known before Roman arrival. This reveals how Roman and local cultures met at this frontier location.
