Talsperre Wolfersgrün, Earth-fill dam in Wolfersgrün, Germany
Talsperre Wolfersgrün is an earth-fill dam in Hirschfeld that impounds the waters of Hirschfelder Wasser and Crinitzbach. The structure extends 146 meters and features a clay core with an earth-fill design.
The structure was built between 1950 and 1954 to supply drinking water to the city of Zwickau. After this function ended in 1998, it underwent major renovation and remains an important regional facility today.
The dam sits within a protected landscape known for its granite character. During renovation work, habitats were deliberately created for sand lizards that visitors may observe in the area today.
The reservoir is freely accessible and offers good views from the dam itself. The best visiting period is spring and summer, when weather is mild and the landscape is at its most active.
The dam slopes differently on each side: the air-facing side has a gentler gradient of 1:4, while the water-facing slope is steeper at 1:3. This asymmetrical design reflects how water pressure and erosion are managed in different ways on each surface.
