Everstenmoor, Protected wetland area in Oldenburg, Germany.
Everstenmoor is a protected wetland covering around 118 hectares north of the Küstenkanal with multiple marsh ecosystems and specialized plant communities. The terrain includes higher and lower areas that create natural divisions within the reserve and support different types of vegetation.
The reserve received protection status in 1990 and was expanded in 2018 to better align with European nature conservation guidelines. This growth reflected changing views on how much land should be safeguarded for natural habitats.
Local residents historically dug peat from these wetlands to fuel their homes, shaping the landscape in ways still visible today. The remains of this past use blend into the natural environment and tell the story of people who once lived off this land.
You can reach the reserve through marked trails starting from Kavallerieweg and Sandfurter Weg. The Freesenweg path offers an organized route for walking through the landscape without getting lost.
The reserve contains natural raised and sunken formations where uncommon plants like sundew and woolly cotton grass grow in oxygen-poor soil. These special conditions allow species to thrive that cannot survive in typical ground.
