Evangelische Hauptkirche Rheydt, Protestant church in Rheydt, Germany.

The Evangelische Hauptkirche Rheydt is a single-nave church of four bays with a steep saddle roof, widened hall-like by two side-aisle bays under hipped dormer roofs instead of a transept. It has a recessed, two-thirds circular apse with slender choir towers, a narrow projecting west bay flanked to the south by the Hahnenturm, and a large main tower set back on the north side as a counterweight to the town hall tower.

Architect Johannes Otzen designed and built this church between 1899 and 1902, replacing a medieval structure that previously stood on the site. The building sustained significant damage during World War II and was subsequently reconstructed and restored.

Since November 2011 the church has been a Nagelkreuzzentrum (Cross of Nails Centre), part of the international Coventry network for reconciliation. The name Rheydt comes from the old Jülich lordship; the medieval predecessor church, dedicated to Saint Alexander, became Protestant in the 16th century. Inside, look for the gravestone of the Otto von Bylandt family, walled in by the sacristy door, and the 1817 Reformation memorial tablet in the tower's ground floor.

The church stands on the Marktplatz, next to the town hall built in 1897, with the oversized main tower set back on the north side between the nave and the transept. The building was entered in Mönchengladbach's monument list on 14 May 1985 under No. H 020. The Förderkreis Hauptkirche, founded in 1995, supports restoration work; the largest of the three side towers still lacks its pointed helm, left off after the war as a reminder of the destruction.

The interior places the pulpit altar as the primary focal point while minimizing supporting pillars to give every seat a clear line of sight. This spatial design reflects careful planning for both acoustics and visibility from the original construction period.
