Felsenmeer, National geological site in Hemer, Germany
The Felsenmeer covers 35 hectares of land with limestone formations extending 600 meters in length and 200 meters in width, rising 45 meters above the valley floor.
Iron ore mining activities in the Felsenmeer caves date back to the 8th century, representing the earliest documented iron extraction site in Westphalia.
Local folklore tells of dwarf king Alberich who protected precious metals in the Sundwig forest against giants, leading to the creation of the Felsenmeer.
The site features marked trails with viewing platforms and information panels that explain geological details, including access to virtual cave tours through QR codes.
The limestone structures formed 385 million years ago in a tropical shallow sea, developing into a cone karst landscape between 20 and 30 million years ago.
