Fentbach-Schanze, Celtic archaeological site in Weyarn, Germany.
Fentbach-Schanze is a Celtic Iron Age settlement located on a plateau between two river valleys in Upper Bavaria, protected by steep slopes. The entire site spreads across a large area with earthen walls and natural terrain features that form the ancient fortification.
Excavations beginning in 1877 revealed that this area was inhabited during the Late Iron Age, uncovering tools, pottery, and other objects. These discoveries show that people lived and worked here over an extended period.
The site reveals how Celtic communities organized themselves and practiced crafts long before Roman times. Visitors can see traces of this ancient settlement in the landscape and understand the daily life that unfolded here.
The site is accessible by foot or bicycle and lies in a rural area with marked walking trails. The best time to visit is during the warmer months when paths are dry and easy to walk on.
The natural terrain played a key role in defense, with rocky slopes on the northern and western sides that were difficult to climb. Combined with human-built walls, these natural features created a strong fortress.
