Spantekow Fortress

Spantekow Fortress is a Renaissance-era fortress that spans several hectares and is surrounded by a water-filled moat. The structure features an irregular square layout with a distinctive gatehouse serving as the main entrance.

The fortress underwent complete reconstruction between 1558 and 1587 under the supervision of Ulrich von Schwerin and his wife Anna. This rebuilding transformed it into one of the most advanced defensive installations of its time in the region.

The fortress displays Italian influences in its architectural design, visible in the sophisticated defensive elements throughout the structure. You can see this rare example of Renaissance military thinking applied to Northern Germany's fortification needs.

The fortress is currently undergoing extensive renovations and remains closed to visitors. Plan a return visit once the transformation into an international arts center is complete.

This is the only surviving ringfort from the early Renaissance period in Northern Europe that preserves its original defensive layout. Its water moat system and symmetrical arrangement reflect Italian fortification principles of that era.
