St. Johanneskirche

St. Johanneskirche is a church building in Deutz constructed in Romanesque Revival style using substantial brick masonry. The structure displays typical features of its era with a solid exterior that defines the streetscape of the neighborhood.

The building was completed in 1861 under architect Eduard Kramer as an expression of religious architecture from the founding era. It suffered severe damage during World War II and was later rebuilt.

The church takes its name from John the Baptist and shapes the Deutz neighborhood with its imposing brick form. Visitors can observe how religious buildings from the 1800s structured urban spaces and continue to define the character of the district today.

The building is centrally located in the Deutz neighborhood and is easily accessible on foot. Keep in mind that regular religious services take place, which may affect visiting hours.

The building was destroyed down to its foundations during World War II and had to be completely rebuilt afterward. This reconstruction makes it a remarkable example of how Cologne's urban infrastructure recovered after the war.
