Fichtelberg Cable Car, Aerial tramway in Oberwiesenthal, Germany.
The Fichtelberg Cable Car is an aerial tramway in the Ore Mountains that connects the town center of Oberwiesenthal to the summit. It rises several hundred meters, carrying passengers from the lower station at the base to the upper station on the peak.
The cable car was built in 1924 and made it easy for visitors and winter sports enthusiasts to reach the mountain. After damage during World War II, it was restored in the mid-1950s and has operated continuously since then.
The cable car links the town with the mountain and has been a familiar meeting point for visitors across all seasons for many decades. People use it to reach ski slopes quickly or simply to walk around at the top and enjoy the views.
The cabins are spacious and can accommodate many passengers at once, so wait times remain manageable even on busy days. Visitors should dress warmly, as the weather at the summit is cooler and windier than in the town below.
The system uses four separate cables to operate reliably even on slopes as steep as 50 degrees. This technical design was remarkably innovative when built in 1924 and made it possible to construct a cable car on such challenging terrain.
