St. Nikolai, Lutheran church in Harvestehude, Germany
St. Nikolai is a Lutheran church in Harvestehude featuring modern architecture that rises to about 89 meters at Klosterstern. The building spans roughly 40 meters in length and 35 meters in width, with contemporary design that shapes the neighborhood's appearance.
The original St. Nikolai was destroyed by bombing in 1943 during World War II. The current building was completed in 1962, reflecting how the community rebuilt after the war.
The interior features an altar mosaic by Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka with bold colors and expressive forms. Walking through the space, you can also see the historic Coester window from 1939, which survived the destruction of the earlier building.
The church is located in the Eimsbüttel district and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors can enter during regular opening hours to view the interior and artwork at a leisurely pace.
In 1956, the parish made a bold choice to build the new church at Klosterstern rather than at its original location. This decision created a new church square that reshaped the character of the neighborhood.
