Leipzig-Mockau Airport, Cultural heritage airport site in Leipzig, Germany
Leipzig-Mockau Airport is a former flight facility at the northern edge of Leipzig with a terminal building and control tower. The grounds extend over several hundred meters and show the structure of an early German aviation center.
Operations began in 1913 and served as Leipzig's main flight hub until the 1920s. A new airport near Halle then gradually replaced it, leading to the site's decline.
The terminal building displays early 20th century German airport design with a solid structure that reflects the time when aviation was still new to the city. Walking through the site shows how different spaces were organized to handle the operations of that era.
The site sits near Autobahn A14 and is accessible by public transportation connected to Leipzig's northern commercial district. Visitors should note that the grounds mainly consist of industrial spaces and exhibition areas.
The site had two radio beacons labeled LG and L that guided aircraft approaches during the 1960s. These navigation aids show how early aviation technology provided safe flight procedures.
