Schloss Lindenau, Renaissance castle in Lindenau, Germany
Schloss Lindenau is a three-story Renaissance castle in the village of Lindenau, featuring a staircase tower and a round tower with a conical roof. The western facade shows late Baroque details added during later building phases, giving the structure a layered appearance.
The castle was built in 1584 as a fortified residence and received a tower addition in 1609 during a period of regional unrest. Later owners added Baroque details and redesigned parts of the property, leaving traces of each era on the building.
The chapel on the grounds, built in the 17th century, was part of daily life on the estate rather than a separate institution. Visitors walking around the exterior can still read the layout of the property and how its different parts once worked together.
The castle is not open to visitors at the moment, but the exterior and the park around it can be seen on foot from the outside. Walking around the grounds gives a good sense of the overall layout and the different building phases visible on the facade.
The park around the castle was laid out in 1736 as a formal Baroque garden and later redesigned as an English landscape park in the 19th century. This kind of transformation was common across German estates at the time, as owners moved away from geometric order toward a more natural-looking setting.
