Wallfahrtskirche Heilig Kreuz, Baroque pilgrimage church in Westerndorf am Wasen, Rosenheim, Germany

St. Johann Baptist und Heilig Kreuz in Westerndorf am Wasen, near Rosenheim, is a Baroque pilgrimage church built on a circular ground plan about 20 m across, its interior shaped into a cross by double-shell walls. A pale yellow facade carries a tall arched window; the main space is crowned by a 20 m onion dome of ribbed, scaled form topped with a gold sphere and finial, while a slender tower with square base and octagonal belfry rises beside it. The interior is 11 m high, with restrained stucco, a gallery added in 1758 and a floor of Ruhpolding marble.

Planning began in 1648, right after the Thirty Years' War, on the orders of pastor Kaspar Waldherr, because the Gothic predecessor was dilapidated; Constantin Pader of Munich supplied the design. Construction started in 1668 under master mason Georg Zwerger of Schliersee, the church was consecrated to John the Baptist around 1670/71, and it was completed in 1691. The square lower tower survives from the predecessor building.

The church continues to draw pilgrims who come to venerate the Holy Cross and participate in religious services. This practice has remained central to the spiritual life of the local community over the centuries.

The church is located at Zugspitzstraße 20 in Rosenheim and is open to visitors, particularly during heritage events like Tag des offenen Denkmals. It is wise to check opening times in advance and wear respectful clothing since it remains an active place of worship.

The cemetery chapel west of the church, facing the tower, was built at the same time and by the same masters as the church, as a gateway building to the cemetery; its cemetery-side exit was later walled up and it was renovated in 1996. Inside, a votive painting of 1691 shows skeletons rising from their graves to defend a kneeling knight, by legend Caspar der Törringer, from armed pursuers.
